New Economy Roundup: Fair Housing, Platform Cooperatives, & Creative Leadership Training

Jan 30, 2020 | New Economy Roundup

This week we’re talking about the recent win for Moms 4 Housing and community land trusts in Oakland, the year in review in the cooperative digital economy, and an intensive training for creative community building.

Stories From the Field

A Win for Fair Housing & CLTs: After being forcibly evicted and arrested for occupying a vacant house in Oakland, last weekMoms 4 Housing won the chance to purchase the home with the Oakland Community Land Trust. Wedgewood Properties, the company that owns the house, has also agreed to give community land trusts the right of first refusal on the 50 other homes they own in Oakland. Learn more how CLTs can remove land from speculative markets and create permanent affordable housing.

17 Acres, 100 Residents, 1 Resident Owned Community: With the design and financing help of NEC members Cooperative Development Institute and Local Enterprise Assistance Fund, residents of Jo-Len Village banded together to form their resident-owned community. Read how two NEC member organizations helped organize $14 Million to boost this community to control its own destiny.

Black Appalachian Young & Rising Gathering: With attendees from Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, the gathering convened 40 Black youth in Central Appalachia to discuss challenges and opportunities in the region including building regional cultural centers. Check out the recap from the Appalachia’s New Day campaign from NEC member organization the Mountain Association for Community Economic Development.

Solidarity Economies Abroad

The Year in Global Platform Cooperatives: Check out this 2019 year in review from The Platform Cooperative Consortium updating you on the cooperative digital economy, including numerous internationally based cooperatives. From Barcelona to Brazil read about the research papers, news articles, podcasts, emerging projects, and events from 2019 and into the new year

Climate Action in Barcelona: 2019 has been called the “year of climate emergency declarations,” with one in ten people on the planet now living in a place that’s declared a climate emergency. Earlier this month, we saw a striking example in Barcelona, where officials pointed to the “current economic model based on continuous growth and a never-ending race for profits” as a primary contributor to climate change, and named the development of solidarity economies as a solution in their action plan.

Feminist Agroecology in Argentina: The Gender Secretary of the Argentinian Union of Land Workers illuminates how shifting from agribusiness to agroecology must go hand in hand with recovering women’s role as caretakers of the land, the planet, and the family, at the same time as men learn to share the care work. Read how this union of 15,000 rural workers is working to uproot the gendered violence of the agribusiness model.

2020 Co-op Innovation Application

Capital Impact Partners and The National Cooperative Bank are offering their 5th annual $50,000 Co-op Innovation Award! We’re proud of all our members who are past winners including USFWC, DAWI, Project Equity, and SELC. This grant initiative funds projects educating new audiences on the impact and potential of the cooperative model to disrupt income inequality, steward community ownership, and create strong, vibrant places of opportunity. Priority will be given to food, worker, and housing co-ops, but all sectors are invited to apply for the 2020 Co-op Innovation Award Application.

Creative Community Leadership

The Creative Community Leadership Institute (CCLI), co-led by NEC member organization Springboard for the Arts, is an intensive, in-person, cohort-based training program with real-world practice for artists, culture bearers, community organizers, community development practitioners, and other leaders seeking to deepen their impact in creative community building.

CCLI hosts three cohorts per year, one each in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, with one being located in Native communities, nations, or tribal land. Applications are due March 9th, and online info sessions will be hosted throughout February.
