Sharing Methods for Communal Survival

Oct 30, 2026 | Events

As the political and ecological threats against our communities continue to escalate, it’s time to ready ourselves with the practical skills and knowledge we need for the turbulent times ahead.

Join us for Sharing Methods for Communal Survival on November 9th to learn from the experiences of three NEC members building solidarity economies to keep their communities strong and rooted in place.

We’ll run 3-concurrent workshops you can pick from:

We All We Got AND All We Need with Black Mamas Village

We will discuss resisting and unlearning traditional nonprofit operations, programming, and funding and how to create abundance and through solidarity economy practices. We will share what we are doing in Austin, Texas-including our cooperative leadership structure, free store, food pantry, co-location, food pantry, community weaving and more. We will also hold space for attendees to share how they are embodying these practices in their work.

The New Economy Is Already Here with Boston Impact Initiative

Description:The new economy isn’t waiting on a top-down overhaul. It’s working now, at neighborhood scale, wherever people redesign how money and power flow in their place. We’ll look at four replicable examples: Huurav, a coalition of 23 tribal groups building local CDFIs that link renewable energy jobs with home lending; Buy Back the Block, where neighbors co-own their commercial block; property tax reforms that stop poorer neighborhoods from subsidizing richer ones; and The Farmers Land Trust, which secures long-term land for regenerative growers. Participants will leave with ways to spot the inflection points in their own local economies.

Resistance on the Bloc with Hyper-Local Economics for Climate Survival with Survival Bloc

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore alternative economic solutions and frameworks for building neighborhood resiliency + power in the face of climate disaster and other community crises. This workshop draws from the BIPOC and working-class experimentations of hyper-local organizing strategies that have been deployed in the face of state violence, repression, and governmental abandonment across the South and the Midwest. Together, we’ll discuss the role of building the solidarity economy in an era of climate survival, current experimentations within the Survival Bloc network, interrogate organizing gaps + tendencies within our movements, and envision pathways forward that emphasize the importance of shifting solidarity economic work from the macro to the micro.
