Location: Remote position with a strong preference for someone based in the US South

Compensation: NEC uses an equity-based compensation calculator to determine exact rates which factors in cost of living, dependents, and other factors. Our minimum salary is $68,000, with a generous benefits and PTO package. 

Time Commitment: Full Time Salaried Position (32 hours per week).

WHO IS NEC?

New Economy Coalition (NEC) is a membership-based organization working to build the power and scale of the solidarity economy movement in the United States. Our network of 200+ member organizations are working to transform the extractive economy and build up community ownership and just transition solutions through intersectional strategies. NEC members work across regions and various solidarity economy sectors, including co-ops, community land trusts, participatory budgeting, public banks, credit unions, energy democracy, and more!

NEC is a fully remote organization. In a typical year, we expect staff to travel within the United States several times a year to staff retreats, conferences, and donor visits. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not currently traveling and are convening all programs virtually.

 

SUMMARY

NEC is seeking a full-time Network Organizer to join our staff and serve on our Network Organizing and Regional Organizing circles. The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to racial, economic, and environmental justice, and will have skill sets at the intersections of community organizing, coalition-building, and solidarity economics.

Although the position is remote and we welcome candidates from throughout the US to apply, we have a strong preference to hire someone based in the US South. 

The Network Organizer’s main objective is to support NEC’s member organizations and leaders to implement our strategic plan, with a particular focus on helping develop our regional organizing strategy, infrastructure, and programs.  

Additional key roles include coordinating 1-2 of NEC’s member working groups and participating in NEC’s workplace democracy. 

NEC is shifting our structure from a traditional nonprofit to a worker self-directed nonprofit model. As a member of a worker self-directed nonprofit, the Network Organizer may be asked to support an operations circle and will eventually become a member of the staff General Circle, which oversees the management of the organization. In this new model, we are experimenting with peer supervision (rather than a traditional supervisor-supervisee relationship) as our approach to support, accountability, and decision-making. 

This is a full-time (32 hrs/week), salaried position. Our work is rigorous, but we prioritize space for joy, for healing, and for connection. The ideal candidate will contribute to the creation of a liberatory work culture in which folks can bring their whole selves to the work.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

NEC Network Organizing [60%]

  • Participate in the Network Organizing Circle, including supporting core membership functions. This may include:
    • Contributing to ongoing member services, like monthly member meetings, newsletters, trainings, and 1-1 support. 
    • Recruiting and on-boarding new member organizations
    • Maintaining a portfolio of member organizations in which you would be the lead staff contact.
    • Supporting the intentional development of member leadership through formal and informal structures, including our board and working groups.
    • Helping organize Annual Member Meetings
    • Connecting members within and across regions to foster alignment and collaboration between projects and institutions.
    • Developing and practicing a culture of care within the network that supports members to be in this work together for the long-haul. 
  • As part of the Regional Organizing Circle, the Network Organizer will play a leading role in the development of NEC’s regional organizing strategy. This may include: 
    • Convening NEC members and partners for peer-learning and to assess, map, share, and vision their regional solidarity economies.
    • Working with members and partners to develop proposals for new programs, budget allocations, and strategies for advancing our regional work.  
    • Working with the NEC Communications Circle and working group to ensure that visionary stories of regional organizing that is already happening in our network reach the broader network and public.
    • Supporting others on the NEC staff to incorporate a regional perspective to all the work that is moving in the network.
    • Participating in regional coalitions and convenings with movement partners and members. 

Working Group Coordination [20%]

  • Depending on specific skills and interest, this role will coordinate 1-2 NEC member working group(s): Education, Policy, Black Solidarity Economy Team, and/or Rural Electric Cooperatives
  • Working Group Coordination responsibilities may include supporting members to develop shared strategy, campaigns, storytelling, educational resources, and trainings. Additionally, working groups coordinators will manage meeting notes, schedules, files, and calendar events. 

General Organizational Responsibilities [20%]

  • Participating in weekly staff meetings and regular General Circle meetings with staff and board, including supporting with occasional facilitation and note-taking.
  • Participating in staff-wide trainings, staff study group, and strategic planning processes.
  • Attending and supporting annual NEC Member Gathering (hopefully in-person in 2022).
  • Attending virtual membership meetings, including supporting planning and facilitation.
  • Possibly participating in one of NEC’s operations circles, depending on interest, need, and experience.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of formal education, paid work experience, unpaid/volunteer experience, and life experience will be considered to meet the following:

  • Strong preference for candidates who have accountable relationships with NEC’s Southern member organizations and/or experience working in solidarity economies in the South.
  • Strong preference for candidates who are based in the US South.
  • 3-5 years (or more) experience with community organizing, campaigning, and coalition-building.
  • Demonstrated ability to encourage, train, and support people as collaborators.
  • Interest in traveling for site visits, meetings and gatherings when that is safe
  • Understanding of and commitment to solidarity economy values, such as racial, economic, and climate justice; cooperative ownership; democratic governance; and systems change. 
  • Strong time management skills: self-motivated with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with Powerbase (or a similar CRM) & Google Workspace.
  • Desire and ability to work in a remote environment.
  • Willing to learn from mistakes, receive feedback, and give feedback to others.
  • Commitment to building a culture of mutual accountability, liberation, and respect.
  • Experience in building networks or coalitions.
