Presidential Candidates Are Talking About Poverty: In partnership with NEC member organization Institute for Policy Studies, the Poor People’s Campaign launched a People’s Moral Budget and hosted a presidential forum while they campaigned in Washington, D.C. earlier this week. Here are a couple recaps of the budget and the presidential forum.
Over 200 Economists Endorse Medicare for All As Public Good: NEC member organization, National Economic and Social Rights Initiative (NESRI) organized 219 economists to endorse a letter that calls the current healthcare system “exorbitant and wasteful” and assert that “the time is now to create a universal, single-payer, Medicare for All health care system in the United States.” Read their statement here.
Push for Structural Reforms at Juneteenth House Hearing on Reparations: "It is impossible to think about the inheritance of America without the inheritance of slavery… enslavement shaped every crucial aspect of the economy and politics of America," Ta-Nehisi Coates declared to the House Judicial Committee. Solidarity Economies Abroad
International Public Banks Hold $37 Trillion: As NEC member organization Public Banking Institute works to build the public banking sector in the United States, across the world there are already 693 public banks which own assets worth US$37.72 trillion. This Transnational Institute article discusses some of the many models adopted in different countries.
A Cross-Atlantic Plan to Break Capital’s Control: “If we are to address large-scale climate crisis and a dangerously oversized financial system that gambles using the public’s money, we need to embrace radically different configurations of ownership on both sides of the Atlantic — and to build even more international bridges between movements, across language barriers as well as between movements in the Global North and Global South.” Read about the collaboration between the US and UK economic democracy movements.
Call For Papers – “Social Solidarity Economy and the Commons”: Open until TOMORROW June 20th, the second international conference themed “Contributions to the Deepening of Democracy” will be a meeting point for researchers, activists, public officials and social entrepreneurs involved in social and solidarity economy, governance of the commons and new social movements in different parts of the world. CoFED 2019 Co-op Academy Cohort
Last year, NEC member organization, the Cooperative Food Empowerment Directive (CoFED) announced their new mission to center young folx of color as the leaders we need to grow a cooperative food economy. This year, for the first time ever, every extraordinary person selected to join their Summer Co-op Academy is a person of color (POC) advancing food, land, and racial justice! Expanding beyond traditional food co-ops, they are innovating a range of cooperative solutions to meet broad community needs for health and healing, joy and justice, wealth and well-being. New Economy Law And Tax Professionals
As the movement toward economic democracy grows, and more people form or convert to worker cooperatives, worker self-directed nonprofits, and other democratically-governed structures, the need for legal and tax assistance increases. Through their new network “Law for Economic Democracy,” NEC member organization the Sustainable Economies Law Center (SELC) hopes to fill that gap and build a robust network of legal and tax practitioners that can share resources and best practices, connect and learn from each other, and support the greater movement toward economic democracy. 2019 Socialism Conference
In a moment of rising class struggle, resurgent social movements, and the growing popular appeal of socialism, the Socialism 2019 Conference is an important gathering space for today’s left. Featuring dozens of panels, lectures, and workshops on topics like the fight against racism, how to win gender justice, radical working class struggle, current debates on the left, and more, the Socialism Conference brings together hundreds of activists from around the country for four-days of organizing, learning and collaboration. USFWC Western Worker Coop Convening
NEC member organization, the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives and the Network of Bay Area Cooperatives invite you to a day of skill-building and networking for worker co-ops and members of democratic workplaces in the Bay Area region of the U.S. It will be focused on nuts and bolts workshops to build leadership and the tools needed to grow the worker co-op movement. Springboard For The Arts “Work Of Art” Intensive
This training is designed for artists, arts leaders, and arts educators who want to lead the Work of Art: Business Skills for Artists curriculum in their community or classes.
