Title: Human Resources and Care Director
Location: Remote, U.S.
Compensation: NEC uses a staff-affirmed transparent compensation calculator to determine exact rates. Salaries are non-negotiable and are calculated from the same base rate for all positions, with adjustments upward for factors like geographic location. Most salaries currently fall between $75-90,000 per year. We also offer a generous benefits and PTO package, including fully paid health insurance and an automatic 3% 401k employer contribution.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Human Resources & Care Director’s role is to care for the people and people systems at the organization in a way that best meets our goals for liberatory self-governance while navigating compliance. This requires a deep commitment to anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices, in order to implement our worker-centered model in a non-hierarchical organizational structure. The closest matches within other organizational models would be the HR Director. This role is primarily internal-facing, and interacts with external work through member working groups and external partnerships.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Human Resources(HR) Circle Coordination (50%)
- Leading HR work, including: ongoing compliance tasks, addressing emergent HR needs, leading employee reviews, communicating with employees about HR issues, and onboarding/offboarding staff
- Researching policies & practices proactively – both keeping up with compliance and movement-aligned practices. Stay updated on labor laws, ensure compliance in all HR practices, and mitigate legal risks.
- Being the first point of contact for PEO/payroll/benefits, legal support, HR memberships, and board HR reps.
- Being the first point of contact for people with HR concerns; serving on accountability & support circles
- Leading semi-annual compliance and policy review processes (compensation review, handbook review, etc)
- Coordinating (and sometimes co-creating) trainings for staff & members on HR topics.
Culture and Care Circle Anchor (30%)
- Participate as one of the main point people for this circle. May include coordinating role in the future.
- Co-lead projects of C3 circle, including equity audit, conflict support, feedback circles, culture trainings, etc
- Support acknowledgement and rituals for accomplishments and transitions calendar
Professional development (10%)
- Pursue topics & certifications as identified
- Continuous learning & application in the fields of HR & Rad Ops, as well as sociocracy and related topics
Organizational governance responsibilities (10%)
- Support peer accountability and conflict resolution within NEC’s collective governance framework
- Participating in all-staff activities: staff meetings, member meetings, retreats, program planning, etc
- Reading & responding to Slack, Loomio, and more
- Ad hoc committees like retreat planning
- Peer accountability work
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of formal education, paid work experience, unpaid/volunteer experience, and life experience will be considered to meet the following:
- Significant experience in a formal HR or union rep role which brought familiarity with HR functions such as hiring, onboarding, evaluations, benefits, leaves, compensation adjustments, policy reviews, offboarding, and similar.
- Significant experience navigating regulatory & compliance landscapes in the HR or employee rights field. A degree, certification, research, or similar demonstration of knowledge is preferred.
- Strong racial justice analysis, holds a commitment to cooperativism and the abolition of racial capitalism
- Demonstrated experience at creating or advocating for policies & practices which center humanity, expand imagination, and include all stakeholders (e.g., equitable hiring processes, inclusive benefits, or restorative justice approaches to conflict resolution)
- Intimate knowledge of organizational health and culture-building skills rooted in Black liberation, Indigenous sovereignty, decolonial feminism and/or disability justice .
- Demonstrated experience in organizational management, change management, team-building, or organizational culture-building.
- Demonstrated experience leading group feedback & decision-making processes and/or working within a non-hierarchical group.
- Commitment to making HR & culture work braver, more accessible, more flexible, and more decentralized.
- Commitment to building a culture of worker self- direction, mutual accountability, liberation, respect, and joy.
- Strong relationship-building skills; listening to and taking an interest in others.
- Tech savvy and proficient with Zoom, Google Workspace, Slack, Asana, Loomio.
- Commitment to solidarity economy values, such as racial, economic, and climate justice; cooperative ownership; democratic governance; and systems change.
- Strong time management skills: self-motivated with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Desire and ability to work in a remote environment for 32 hours a week.
- Willing to learn from mistakes, receive feedback, and give feedback to others.
NOTE
NEC is a fully remote organization. The person in this position may be expected to travel within the United States several times a year to staff retreats or conferences. This role requires extended use of a computer. Working hours are flexible but everyone on staff is generally expected to be available between 12-4pm EST Monday through Thursday.
