Respect the Hustle: “Women like me aren’t supposed to run for office.” In a stunning upset that ignited the New York and national political worlds, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez – a Latinx Bronx-born community organizer and member of the Democratic Socialists of America – defeated Representative Joseph Crowley, a 19-year incumbent who had not faced a primary challenger in 14 years. Cooperatives Unleashed: A new report from the New Economics Foundation explores an increase in worker cooperatives: “It’s clear that the impact of a significantly larger co-operative sector can ‘ripple out’, helping to transform the economy as a whole.” Read the Co-operative Party’s commissioned report.
Class And The New Economy: “Dismantling class privilege is a complex and ongoing process, and we as an organization don’t have it all figured out either. The Crisis Next Time: During the next financial crisis, a robust policy response can and should convert failed banks to permanent public ownership, rather than merely using public money to make corporate America whole again. Solidarity Economies Abroad
Care Economy in India: UN Women notes that across 31 countries in the Global South, less than 1% of women living in poverty have access to childcare services. By listening to its members, this women-led Indian union pioneered community-led childcare for working mothers in the informal economy. Learn more from Apolitical.
Japan Cooperative Alliance: In Japan, cooperatives number over 65 million members (almost half of the total population); account for 1/2 of the total sold output from Japan's farming, forestry, and fisheries industries; and provide insurance and banking services for 1/4 of the population. Barcelona Public Energy Company: Barcelona Energia, a new public electricity distributor, became active on July 1st and intents to play an active role in the energy market, making it fairer, more efficient and sustainable. Read about this public victory.
